What does quality dog insurance cover?

You pet may know how to “speak”, but they can’t always tell you when they’re not feeling well. When your pet is sick or injured, you want to get them the best care available without having to worry about cost. Other insurers can have limits and/or sub limits that can be reached quickly in times of need, leaving you out of pocket or unable to continue treatment right when you need to most.

We keep paying for all covered conditions, no matter the cost. This includes hospital stays, diagnostic tests, medications, surgeries, and other treatments that arise when your furry family member is sick or hurt. Cover kicks in after you meet your excess (if you’ve chosen one).

What we do not exclude

At Trupanion, we do not exclude any conditions or breed-specific ailments, including hereditary and congenital conditions, as long as symptoms were not evident before you signed up. All new injuries and illnesses are eligible for cover.

If your dog pulls a muscle, develops allergies, or is diagnosed with hip dysplasia or lymphoma, we’ll be there. Arthritis, eating your chocolate stash, confusing your underpants for food, or breaking a bone? If we’ve covered it before, and we’ll do it again.

When should I get dog insurance?

The best time to think about insurance for your dog is when they’re young and healthy (puppy or adult). Every dog is prone to certain types of illnesses and injuries in each stage of life, and insurance helps you to be prepared every step of the way.

TIP: No dog insurance provider covers pre-existing conditions. Insuring your dog when they’re young or when you first bring them home helps you to get the most out of your cover because they’re less likely to develop pre-existing conditions.

Frequently asked questions

If your dog needs unexpected veterinary care, it can quickly become very expensive and having dog insurance can help cover the costs.

In the traditional model, you pay the upfront costs of care on the day of treatment and make a claim. It’s processed, which can take days and weeks. Then you’re reimbursed up to a set percentage. With Trupanion, we can pay your vet directly at the time of checkout so your pet can receive the care they need without the financial stress of waiting to be reimbursed.

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and their health insurance cover is no different. Trupanion dog insurance prices can vary greatly between pets and are primarily based on the following factors:

  • Age
  • Breed
  • Location
  • Gender

For the best idea of what to expect with your cat health insurance rate, go ahead and get a quote or give us a call!

In addition to this, you can pick a price that works for your budget with our optional flexible excess. If you want an excess, you can pick any amount up to $1000—or you can choose to skip having an excess at all. You can increase your excess at any time by giving us a call.

Trupanion has a fair and unique pricing model, learn about how different our pricing is here in Australia. We’re here to show Australia how great pet insurance can be.

At Trupanion, we believe that all dogs — big or little, purebred or mixed — deserve access to the veterinary care they need. This is why we do not impose breed restrictions and cover all dog breeds.

The one exception to this is in our coverage for dog breeders.

Yes! We cover all kinds of dogs, including service dogs.

We do not cover spay or castration for dogs for a specific reason. Spay and castration are both considered voluntary procedures as well as something you can plan and budget for. We’re here so your dog’s new, unexpected veterinary costs aren’t a financial burden or obstacle to your pet receiving the care they need. By not covering expected or unnecessary treatments, we can ensure that you get the most value out of your dog health insurance plan.
